16 Jun Bunratty Castle, County Clare
This is a great castle to see if you are around Limerick on any tours of Ireland.
Bunratty Castle stands on the Northern shore of the Shannon River.
The first castle was built here by Thomas de Clare in 1277.
The present castle was built in the middle of the fifteenth century by Sioda MacConmara.
It passed to the famous O’Brien family in the sixteenth century.
There are dungeons and a chapel that are particularly interesting.
An unusual “solar room” sets it aside from a lot of other castles.
If you have time, try and attend one of the Medieval Banquets that take place at the castle.
It’s an experience to be relished.
Beside the castle is the very famous “Durty Nellys” pub.
This is a great traditional watering hole with very good live music.
