Cromarty, Highlands

Cromarty is a historic town situated on the tip of the Black Isle in the Highlands.

It sits at the mouth of the Cromarty Firth and is well worth visiting on any tours of Scotland.

After early prominence the port declined around 1672.

Then in 1772 George Ross became involved with the town.

He rebuilt the harbour, established cloth, nail, and spade factories, and even a brewery.

There was also a lace industry set up.

Many of the old buildings have been restored and there are three ancient cottages which are particularly interesting.

The museum is a great place to visit also.

But Cromarty is more than just a fine example of an eighteenth-century town.

There are sandy beaches to enjoy and even a chance to see Bottlenose Dolphins.

The beautiful countryside is worth seeing as is the wildlife.

Cromarty has bird reserves of international importance to enjoy.
