This is a town in Scotland with an interesting history on any tours of Scotland.
It is a true hidden gem.
Dingwall derived its name from the Viking word for parliament.
The town once had a royal castle and was a stronghold of the Earls of Ross until their downfall in 1476.
It may even have been a royal burgh as early as 1226.
The tollbooth in the town dates from 1730.
In front of the tollbooth is the shaft of the old Mercat Cross.
There is also an iron yet from the old town gaol.
Check out the obelisk in memory of the First Earl of Cromarty (1630 – 1714)
The tower on the hill was put up in 1907 to commemorate the birth of General Sir Hector MacDonald (1853 – 1903)
He was known as “Fighting Mac”.
MacDonald won the rare distinction of rising from the ranks to major general.
He was the son of a crofter-mason and enlisted as a private in the Gordon Highlanders at the age of 18.
Sadly, he committed suicide, which is a tragic story.
Dingwall is a good centre for touring the North and the West.
