George Best was a soccer player of world reknown.
Born in Belfast on 22 May 1946.
Best was a precious talent who joined Manchester United at the age of fifteen.
He became one of the first soccer superstars of his generation.
Best was a key member of the Manchester United team that won the European Cup in 1968 and was named European Player of the Year.
He left the club prematurely in 1973, suffering the pressures of stardom and the effects of alcohol abuse.
Best never regained the consistency that rated him one of the greatest players in the world.
He finished his career at an array of clubs in Britain, Ireland, and America before retiring in the early eighties.
He played thirty seven times for Northern Ireland. George Best died on 25 November 2005 following a period of prolonged illness.
Belfast City Airport was named “Georgr Best City Airport” in his memory.
