Once an important ecclesiastical centre , and a Norman stronghold , but now famed as the centre of Irish house-breeding and training industry. The National Stud is on the outskirts of the own in Tully.
St. Brigid founded a convent here in the 5th or 6th century and an adjoining monastery was built a little later. Today S. Brigid’s Cathedral incorporates a 13th century church. The towns 105ft round tower , believed to a date from the 12th century , is usually open for a tour. There are also the beautiful tranquil Japanese Gardens , which are landscaped to plot out the life of man.
Kildare is a real hidden gem with some wonderful sights which make is a must see on your Ireland tours.
