Kinsale is a lovely old town of narrow , winding streets , steep footpaths and Georgian Houses well worth a stop on your tours of Ireland.
A former Naval port , now a fishing village with a fine natural harbour it is a must see attraction rather than a hidden gem. The restaurants are fantastic as well !!!!!!!
In 1601 Spanish troops landed here to help the Irish in a revolt. They besieged and the Northern Irish chiefs marched to relieve them but were defeated by the English ; the failure at Kinsale marked the end of Irish independence.
The Old Head of Kinsale is a cliff , just South of Kinsale , near which the Lusitania was torpedoed in 1915 while carrying a large amount of rifle ammunition and other supplies essential for the war economy and several civilian passengers.
