Macdara’s Island, County Galway

Macdara’s Island, County Galway

This is a little-known island off the coast of Connemara.

It is an interesting place to visit on any tours of Ireland, and is a true hidden gem.

You will need to get a boat from Carna to get to the island though.

The island is in fact a 60-acre granite mountain.

On the island is a very early stone church.

The church was founded by Saint MacDara in the 6th century.

The current structure follows the pattern of early wooden churches that were on the site.

The church has a low entryway, a steep roof, and a lovely round arch window.

On the Saints feast days (June 16th and September 28th each year) pilgrims come to visit from all over Ireland.
