Just a short drive off the road through the tiny village of Moone takes you to a slender , granite , 9th – century High Cross reaching 17ft high. It is a real hidden gem and is worth a stop on your Ireland tours.
The cross , and crumbling walls of a 13th century church , stand on the site of a monastery allegedly founded by St Columba in the 6th century. The cross is intricately carved with 51 panels , including animals and Biblical scenes , among which are Daniel and the Lions , the Sacrifice of Isaac , Adam and Eve , the Crucifixion , the Apostles , the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes and the Flight into Egypt.
