24 Mar Strabane
Steeped in history, Strabane is a vibrant town with a lot to offer tourists and locals alike. Strategically located on the border between counties Tyrone and Donegal, the town is placed in an area of outstanding beauty.
The area has been inhabited from as far back as the New Stone Age with the standing stone in the town centre evidencing this. Dated back to 2500BC it illustrates the town’s rich cultural heritage. During the plantation, the majority of settlers in Strabane were Scots, most of whom were hardworking farmers or craftsmen who quickly stamped their character on the area.
Up until the 1940’s, markets and fairs regularly took place in the town centre. These are still recreated each year, which allows both locals and visitors to experience the rural lifestyle which is so central to Strabane’s history.
Offering a whole range of activities, the town is a perfect day out for all the family. It has a superb golf course and many beautiful routes for hill walking. The wonderful River Mourne runs through the town. Reputed to be one of Northern Ireland’s finest salmon fishing rivers, people from all over the world have come to fish here, including golfing legend Tiger Woods.
