Craigievar Castle, Aberdeenshire

Craigievar Castle, Aberdeenshire

Craigievar Castle, Aberdeenshire

This castle is Aberdeenshire.

It is a “fairy-tale” castle and should be seen on any tours of Scotland.

It is a simple L-plan tower-house, rising straight out of the ground, and seven stories high.

There are delicately corbelled turrets crowned with simple conical roofs.

The castle was built in 1626 for a laird named Forbes, known as “Willie the Merchant”.

It was occupied by the Forbes and Forbes-Sempill family continuously.

Then in 1963 it was presented to the National Trust for Scotland.

The great hall has fantastic décor such as raised panels, heraldry, and elaborate pendants.

The musician’s gallery is also very interesting.

On the arch of the main staircase is the Forbes family motto “Do not vaiken sleeping dogs”
