Derryclare Lough, Connemara

Derryclare Lough, Connemara

Derryclare Lough

This beautiful lough is in the heart of the Connemara countryside.

We usually explore it on our tours of Ireland while staying at Ballynahinch Castle.

In fact, Derryclare Lough forms part of the famous salmon fishery of Ballynahinch.

It is well worth visiting.

The lough lies between Lough Corrib and the Atlantic Ocean.

Beyond it rises the Twelve Bens mountain range.

Each of the peaks are cone shaped quartzite and each one is impressive in its own right.

This countryside is good for botanists as the steep slopes are richly coloured with lichens and mosses.

Many of the people around these parts speak the native Irish language.

In fact, many students come here to learn the language.

The area is also known for the mining of Connemara Marble, which is exported all over the world.
