Dundrum Bay , County Down

This wide picturesque bay is a real hidden gem. It is close to the town of Newcastle and near the world famous Royal County Down Golf Club. There is a fantastic seafood restaurant in the little town of Dundrum called the Mourne Seafood Bar and a great pub/restaurant called the Bucks Head. Great stops on any Ireland tours.

A large Norman castle is also in Dundrum and it is a must see attraction for the views from the tower alone !!!!!

The bay itself is steeped in folklore. It is said that one of the four great waves of Ireland was in the bay and on the death of a king this wave was heard to cry out its lamentation.

It is also said that the great Irish heroe and king ” Fearghusn MacLeide ” was once cursed for swimming in the bay and later returned to slay a sea monster there. Though he died of exhaustion after the tussle. The bay is aid to have remained red from the bloodshed for a whole month !!
