King John's Castle in Limerick

This is not a place we visit on many tours of Ireland.

Many clients want to avoid cities and concentrate on rural Ireland.

But it does have a lot to offer.

It has many fine Georgian houses, interesting old quays, and bridges over the River Shannon.

King Johns Castle dates from 1200 and is an imposing Norman fortress.

It bears the scars of bombardment in 1691 during the Williamite – Jacobite war.

It sits at the East end of Thomond Bridge.

Saint Marys Cathedral dates from 1172, and is noted for its black oak carvings, which are unique in Ireland.

Saint John’s Cathedral is a gloomy but grandiose piece of 19th Century Catholic triumphalism.

It has a 280 feet tall spire.

At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we create bespoke, private trips.
