16 Nov Malahide Castle, County Dublin
Near the seaside dormitory town of Malahide stands a huge castle set in 250 acres of grounds. The castle’s core dates from the 14th century but later additions, such as its rounded towers, have given it a classic fairy-tale appearance. Originally a fortress, the building served as a stately home for the Talbot family until 1973. They were staunch supporters of James II: the story goes that, on the day of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, 14 members of the family breakfasted here; none came back for supper.
Guided tours take in the impressive oak-beamed Great Hall and the Oak Room with its carved panelling as well as the castle’s collection of 28th century Irish furniture. Part of the Portrait Collection, on loan from the National Gallery, can be seen at the castle. It includes portraits of the Talbot family, as well as other figures such as Wolfe Tone.
