Skellig Michael, County Kerry

This is an island off the coast in Ireland.

It is in County Kerry and worth a visit on any tours of Ireland.

Though it is accessible by boat and the weather plays a big part in the ability to visit the island.

In Celtic times the Druids studied the movement of the stars from the island.

The isolation and hostile environment attracted hermits to Skellig Michael throughout the years.

The inhabitants now are the keepers of the lighthouse.

Their lives are difficult with the climb up the 650 foot cliffs both strenuous and adventurous.

There are the remains of an early Christian monastery which was founded by Saint Finian.

The monastery was dissolved in the 12th century.

The first known reference to the Skellig’s appears in Irish annals of a shipwreck occurring around 1400 BC.

Several films have famously used the island as a filming location.

The island was used as the planet “Ahch-To” in “Star Wars”.

Skellig Michael also features in “The Force Awakens” made in 2015.

The island appeared again in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” filmed in 2017.

Aerial footage of the island was also used in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” dated 2019.

So, I bet you have seen the island at some stage on the big screen!
