Westport House, County Mayo

Westport House, County Mayo

Westport House2

This Georgian mansion lies on the shores of Clew Bay if your tours of Ireland take you in that direction.

The present house dates from around 1730 (start date) and is built on the site of one of the O’Malleys castles.

The O’Malley name is that of the incredible “pirate Queen” – Grace O’Malley, a real Irish story.

The current house incorporates the original dungeons from the castle.

There is a magnificent Sicilian marble staircase to see, and floors of different coloured woods.

The balustrades and terraces are also striking features.

The chimneypieces are also of great interest.

The grounds of the house are beautiful just to wander around and the setting is superb.

One final piece of interest is the “Mayo Legion” banner which dates from 1798.

This is when a French landing to support the rebellion was aborted.

The town of Westport generally  is a favourite stop with Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours.
